Ford F-150 Lightning Towing Guide: The Electric Revolution
The Ford F-150 Lightning is not just a truck; it is a mobile power station.
However, towing with an electric truck requires a shift in mindset. At RV Canada, we help Lightning owners navigate the three pillars of EV towing: Power, Payload, and Planning.

The Capability: Standard vs. Extended Range
Your battery choice dictates your towing limit.
-
Extended Range Battery (10,000 lbs):
-
The Stats: 580 hp / 775 lb-ft torque.
-
Max Towing: Up to 10,000 lbs (Requires Max Trailer Tow Package).
-
The Reality: This is the model you want for towing. The larger battery provides the buffer you need for highway headwinds.
-
-
Standard Range Battery (7,700 lbs):
-
The Stats: 452 hp / 775 lb-ft torque.
-
Max Towing: Up to 7,700 lbs (Requires Max Trailer Tow Package).
-
The Limit: While capable, the smaller battery range makes towing heavy trailers stressful on long trips.
-
The "Payload Paradox"
This surprises almost every Lightning owner.
-
The Rule: The "Standard Range" truck often has a Higher Payload (~2,235 lbs) than the "Extended Range" truck (~1,952 lbs).
-
Why? Batteries are heavy. The larger battery adds weight to the truck, which eats into your carrying capacity.
-
The Takeaway: If you buy the Extended Range model for the towing miles, be careful not to overload the bed with heavy gear if you also have a heavy trailer tongue weight.
The Range Reality: The "50% Rule"
Physics is unavoidable. Towing a square travel trailer at 100 km/h creates massive wind resistance.
-
Expectation: You will lose ~50% of your rated range while towing a full-height camper.
-
Extended Range (EPA 515 km):
Expect ~250 km (155 miles) of real-world towing range. -
Standard Range (EPA 386 km): Expect ~190 km (118 miles) of real-world towing range.
-
-
The Strategy: Plan to stop every 2–2.5 hours to charge. The truck’s Intelligent Range system is excellent at predicting this for you, adjusting for terrain and weather in real-time.
The Game Changer: Pro Power Onboard
This is the "Killer App" for RVers.
-
The Feature: The Lightning can export 2.4kW (standard) or 9.6kW (optional) of power through outlets in the bed and frunk.
-
The Benefit: You don't need a campground pedestal. You can plug your RV's 30-amp cord directly into the truck bed and run your Air Conditioner, Microwave, and TV simultaneously while boondocking.
-
The Efficiency: Running your RV all night uses a tiny fraction (typically 3–5%) of the truck’s massive battery.
Ford’s Towing Tech
-
Onboard Scales with Smart Hitch: The truck measures its own weight. The taillights have LED bars that light up to show you if you are overloading the payload or if your tongue weight is too high.
-
Pro Trailer Hitch Assist: Hold a button, and the truck uses cameras and radar to automatically reverse, steer, and brake to place the hitch ball perfectly under the trailer coupler.
-
Mega Power Frunk: With no engine, you have a massive lockable trunk in the front. This is the perfect place to store dirty trailer gear, chocks, and cords, keeping your cab clean.
What Can I Tow With a Lightning?
Aerodynamics are everything.
-
Hi-Lo & Pop-Ups: Trailers that telescope down for travel (like the Safari Condo Alto or a Rockwood Freedom) have almost zero wind resistance. You can tow these with minimal range loss.
-
Standard Travel Trailers: You can easily pull a 25-foot Grand Design Imagine. Just remember the "50% Rule" and plan your charging stops accordingly.
