Dodge Grand Caravan Towing Guide: The Classic Family Hauler

The Dodge Grand Caravan is the undisputed champion of family value. For over a decade, it was the best-selling minivan in Canada, meaning thousands of families rely on it for summer road trips. But unlike modern SUVs, the Grand Caravan is a "what you see is what you get" towing machine—provided you have the right factory options.

At RV Canada, we know this van inside and out. Whether you bought it new or picked it up on the used market, this guide will help you understand if your "Value King" is ready to tow a camper.

Know Your Limit: 3,600 lbs vs. 2,000 lbs

While Dodge advertised a "Best-in-Class" towing capacity of 3,600 lbs, not every Grand Caravan can handle that weight safely.

  • With "Trailer Tow Group" (3,600 lbs): If your van came from the factory with the Trailer Tow Group, you are rated for 3,600 lbs. This package was more than just a hitch; it included a Class II Receiver, a Wiring Harness, and most importantly, Load-Leveling and Height-Control Suspension.

    • How to Check: Look at your rear shock absorbers. If they are thick "Nivomat" self-leveling shocks, you likely have the package.

  • Without Tow Group (2,000 lbs): If your van did not come with the factory package, your towing capacity is often limited to 2,000 lbs unless you upgrade your equipment. Without the heavy-duty cooling and suspension, a 3,000 lb trailer can cause the rear end to sag dangerously and overheat the transmission.

The "Stow 'n Go" Factor & Payload

The Grand Caravan is famous for its Stow 'n Go seating, but this convenience comes with a towing trade-off.

  • The Payload Trap: The seats fold into the floor, which means there is no solid rear axle housing like a truck. This limits your payload capacity.

  • The Math: If you load the van with 7 people (1,050 lbs) and luggage (200 lbs), you have likely used up almost all your payload capacity. This leaves zero room for the trailer's tongue weight.

  • The Rule: If you are towing a camper, you likely need to remove the 3rd-row seats or travel with fewer passengers to keep the van safe.

What Can I Tow With a Grand Caravan?

  • Pop-Up Campers (The Perfect Match): The low profile of a Rockwood Freedom or Jayco Jay Sport is perfect for the Grand Caravan. These units typically weigh 1,800–2,500 lbs and stay out of the wind, keeping your 3.6L Pentastar engine happy on the highway.

  • Prolite Trailers: Canadian-built Prolite trailers are the ultimate solution for minivans. Models like the Eco or Evasion offer hard walls and sleeping for 4-5 people but weigh under 2,000 lbs, staying well within your limits even without the factory tow package.

  • Ultra-Light "Stick and Tin": If you have the 3,600 lb rating, you can tow small bunkhouses like the Forest River Wolf Pup 14CC. Just be very careful with your tongue weight—use a scale to ensure it stays under 350 lbs.

Essential Equipment for Dodge Owners

  • Transmission Cooler: If you are adding an aftermarket hitch to a van that didn't have the factory package, we highly recommend installing an auxiliary transmission cooler. The 6-speed automatic transmission is known to run hot when towing, and a cooler is cheap insurance.

  • Brake Controller: The Grand Caravan never offered a factory brake controller. To tow legally, you must install one. We recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro or Curt Echo, as finding a spot to mount a traditional boxy controller on the Dodge dashboard can be difficult.

  • Weight Distribution Hitch: Because of the Stow 'n Go floor plan, the rear suspension is soft. A Weight Distribution Hitch is mandatory for any trailer over 2,000 lbs to prevent the hitch from dragging on the ground.

Ready for the Family Road Trip?

Your Grand Caravan is a capable budget hauler.

  • Shop Minivan-Friendly RVs: Filter our inventory for Travel Trailers Under 3,000 lbs to find the safest matches.

  • Check Your Shocks: Unsure if you have the Load-Leveling suspension? Stop by our Service Department for a quick inspection.

  • Get Wired: Most used vans only have a 4-pin connector. We can upgrade you to a 7-Pin Harness to power your trailer's brakes and battery.
