The Ultimate Minivan Towing Guide

For active families, nothing beats the versatility of a minivan. But when you want to take the adventure further than a hotel, the question arises: "Can my minivan actually tow a camper?"

The answer is a resounding yes—if you know the rules. Modern minivans like the Chrysler Pacifica, Honda Odyssey, and Kia Carnival are surprisingly capable, often out-towing popular crossovers. However, they are also prone to the "Payload Trap" and have strict limitations for Hybrid models.

At RV Canada, we are the minivan towing experts. Here is everything you need to know to turn your family cruiser into a campsite commander.

1. Chrysler Pacifica: The King & The "No Tow" Zone

The Pacifica is a tale of two powertrains. One is the best-in-class tow vehicle; the other cannot tow at all.

• Gas V6 (The King): If you have the standard 3.6L V6 gas engine, you have a Best-in-Class towing capacity of 3,600 lbs. When equipped with the Trailer Tow Group, you get heavy-duty cooling and suspension leveling that makes it a stable platform for small travel trailers.

• Plug-In Hybrid (The "No Tow"): If you drive the Pacifica Hybrid (PHEV), towing is NOT recommended by Chrysler. The weight of the battery pack eats up your payload capacity, and the transmission is designed for efficiency, not heavy hauling. If you tow with the Hybrid, you risk voiding your warranty.

2. Honda Odyssey: The Reliable Standard

The Honda Odyssey is a favorite for a reason. Powered by a robust V6 and a 10-speed automatic transmission, it is rated for 3,500 lbs across all trim levels.

• The "Cooler" Requirement: Unlike older models, the newer 10-speed Odysseys (2018+) are much more robust. However, to safely reach 3,500 lbs, you must have the dealer-installed Hitch and ATF Cooler package to keep transmission temperatures down on steep climbs.

• Stability: The Odyssey’s low center of gravity makes it exceptionally stable for towing pop-ups and teardrops.

3. Kia Carnival: The Powerful Newcomer

The Kia Carnival brings SUV styling to the minivan segment, and it has the muscle to match.

• V6 Power: With a standard 3.5L V6, the Carnival is rated for 3,500 lbs. It offers plenty of torque for merging onto highways.

• Hybrid Caution: Like the Pacifica, the new Carnival Hybrid may have reduced towing capabilities or specific restrictions. Always check your specific owner's manual before hitching up.

4. Toyota Sienna

The Hybrid Hauler The undisputed champion of fuel efficiency, but watch your RPMs.

• The Hybrid Standard (2021 – Present): Unlike its competitors, every new Sienna is a Hybrid. It pairs a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine with electric motors for a 3,500 lb towing capacity. The benefit is incredible fuel economy (often 20+ MPG towing), but the CVT transmission will rev high on steep mountain grades.

• The Woodland Edition Advantage: If you plan to tow, the Woodland Edition is the trim to get. It comes standard with a Tow Hitch Receiver (Class II), slightly higher ground clearance (+0.6 inches), and standard AWD, making it the most "adventure-ready" minivan right off the lot.

• AWD vs. FWD: We highly recommend the AWD models for towing. The electric motor on the rear axle provides instant torque to help pull a trailer up a wet boat ramp or gravel driveway.
